Supercharger vs. turbocharger

Coca-cola or Pepsi? Blonde or brunette? ..Two basic designs, one widely asked question.. Supercharger or turbocharger? Here is a lil quickie for you on the two..
The turbocharger is more popular and more commonly used than the super-charger. Turbochargers are seen on a lot of big horsepower projects. For example, AMS Performance has a four cylinder pushing more than 1,000 hp. (of course this would have raised a few eye brows ten years ago.) The engine they used was the 4g63, (for you non “car speaking” readers, the engine is off of the Mitsubishi evolution 8 to be exact.) The 4g63 is an icon, but to imagine a four cylinder dishing out over 1000 ponies is like saying one’s Geo Metro will run 11‘s. The debate about whether to use a supercharger or a turbo can also have a lot to do with the consumer. Generally, older generations are more accustomed to supercharger set ups, while younger generations, thanks to “The Fast and the Furious,” have jumped on the boost wagon. With turbo’s being in such high demand, auto manufacturers are now offering a large selection of factory turbocharged cars to choose from, its like a kid in a candy store for most of us tuner junkies. Lets start with the one and only.. Dodge. In 2002 they shocked the market with the release of the Neon SRT-4. Who ever thought of turbo charging a grandma’s daily commuter?! Dodge had even dropped an after market line for their new kid on the block. The neon base started at just over $19,000.00. So let me ask you this; What senior in high school didn’t want a colorful little neon?!
Shortly after, Japan stepped into the game. Mitsubishi finally realized that the American market was ready for their legendary Lancer Evolution. After 8 generations, the Evolution 8 was launched and boy, oh how it was launched! The “Evo” is an all wheel drive 2.0 liter turbocharged lancer on steroids. The Evolution had a starting price of just over $30k, but who wouldn’t be ready to fork out $30k for a car that has a 4cyl engine and that can easily roast cars well over the 50 even 80 grand mark. If you weren’t drooling over the Evolution “what are you on?” you were too busy dreaming about Subaru’s legendary STI. The STI is the Evo‘s biggest rival. The Subaru STI is also an all wheel drive, 4 cylinder freak of nature. It boasts a 2.5L Boxer engine. Both the Evo and the STI are on top of most big kid’s wish lists.
Now, let’s get started on the supercharger. The supercharger has great low end power and also no lag on boost, however, it dies out on top end. A supercharger is best suited for a big boy v8, although they are seen quite often on 4 cylinders! Here are the different types of Superchargers:1.the blower 2.whipple 3.sintrifical 4.Twin screw. A supercharger is a device that forces air above atmospheric pressure, and it uses a pulley to wind up the compressor, which then sucks in air and forces it through the intake system. This is how a supercharger is able to do what it does best.
An average four-stroke engine dedicates one stroke to the process of air induction. The process for this is: 1.The piston moves down 2.the piston moving creates a suction (vacuum)3.Air at atmospheric pressure is sucked into the combustion chamber. To make it simple, a supercharger relieves the dedicated stroker by playing it’s part and more. This means, you will gain maximum potential and power from your engine. A BIG PRO of the supercharger is; You can keep most of your existing parts, for example, headers, intake, etc… A Con: The motor needs power to make power, the supercharger is harder to get more power out of, while the turbocharger is easier to do so. Great examples of supercharged vehicles are: Cobra Svt’ s, the 1st generation Cobalt SS‘s, and the Pontiac Grand Prix GXP.< br> To conclude this story, turbochargers vs. superchargers, they both have a lot to offer. It really depends on who you are talking to. The older generation might prefer supercharger, while most of the younger crowd will prefer turbo. Which ever you decide, just remember it will always be a never ending rivalry. We would like to hear your personal feedback. Which would you prefer?
